Generative AI and AI-Assisted Technologies Policy

Metadata:

Onkologia i Radioterapia recognises the increasing use of generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) in scientific research and publishing. Authors may use AI-assisted tools for language improvement, manuscript organisation, literature discovery and research support, provided that all information, references, analyses and conclusions are independently checked. AI tools cannot be listed as authors, and the human authors remain fully responsible for the originality, accuracy and integrity of their work.

Authors must disclose substantive GenAI use, identifying the tool and explaining how it was used. AI used in research methods, data analysis or medical-image processing must also be described sufficiently for scientific assessment and reproducibility. Fabricated references, patient information, clinical results or misleading images are not permitted. Authors must protect patient confidentiality, obtain applicable ethics approvals and consent, and clearly identify synthetic data or AI-generated illustrations.

Reviewers and editors must preserve the confidentiality of unpublished manuscripts and must not upload them to unauthorised AI services. AI may support appropriate administrative or language tasks but cannot replace independent peer review or human editorial decisions. The journal follows the principles of research integrity and transparency reflected in ICMJE and COPE guidance and will review this policy as technologies and publishing standards evolve.

Add a mandatory manuscript-submission declaration field: “Did you use generative AI or AI-assisted technologies substantively in preparing this manuscript or performing the research? If yes, state the tool, purpose, scope, verification and location of the disclosure in the manuscript.”

Suggested author statement: “The authors used tool/version for purpose. All AI-assisted material was checked and approved by the authors, who accept full responsibility for the manuscript.” If none was used: “No substantive generative AI assistance was used in this work.”
